Laying Welsh and South Western hedges

This chapter describes the various styles of hedges typical of Wales and the South West. These styles have been developed mainly to control sheep, and the hedges are frequently grown on a bank which helps give shelter from the prevailing south westerly winds. Banking and turfing are an important part of constructing and maintaining these boundaries, and are described in Chapter 13 – Banking and turfing. When preparing to lay hedges on banks, clearing of rubbish and preparatory trimming should be done first. This should be followed by banking and turfing, with hedge laying done last.
