Name that tree!

Printed from: https://finalhbks.asgoodasready.com/nature-activities/name-that-tree/

For us, as humans, to live and breathe, trees are an essential part of nature…

Although it’s impossible to give an exact figure, it’s estimated that there are more than 40 billion trees in the world, with Russia and Brazil being the most forested areas.

There are over 100 species of tree in the UK and over 10,000 different species worldwide!

Trees are generally split into two categories, deciduous and coniferous trees.

Deciduous trees have generally broad, flat leaves that fall in the autumn. They include varieties such as birch and maple.

Coniferous trees have sharp, needle-like leaves. They are almost all evergreen and do not shed their leaves throughout the autumn. Species such as pines, firs and cedars are conifers.

Use the step by step guide below to help you identify which trees you can see out and about on your travels. Maybe you can also work out which are coniferous and which are deciduous… happy searching!

  1. Draw a leaf from the tree or take a leaf rubbing
  2. Take a bark rubbing from the trunk
  3. Do you know what type of tree it is?
  4. Is it Deciduous or Coniferous?
